Principal's Back to School Message:

Dear Pioneer Families,

Welcome to the 2017-2018 academic year!  We hope you all had a restful, rejuvenating summer enjoying family and friends.  The Pioneer team is gearing up for another great academic school year.  If you have not already, please take a moment to complete the district re-enrollment process.  The portal opened on July 24th and you should have received an email with directions on how to obtain your username/password and directions on how to complete the process.  Completing this re-enrollment is a required step to complete the registration/class pick-up process on August 21st and is an important way for us to keep safety and emergency information up to date for all students.  If you have any questions about the process, please visit the district web page at:  www.djusd.net

Below are a few highlights for the upcoming year:

-The district adopted a new English Language Arts curriculum call “Benchmark”.  This adoption was overwhelming approved by the teacher teams piloting materials and we are excited about the opportunities for deep learning that we will have with students as we implement this new program.  Teachers are receiving training over the summer and this fall.  If you would like to preview some of the materials and lessons, you will be receiving an electronic copy of this letter with some links to the parent portal on Sunday, August 13th.

-Our facilities department has been busy this summer around campus.  The first project was updating HVAC units in all our classrooms.  A more visible improvement was completed on our playground as the entire surface was re-done with fresh layer of “blacktop” and striping.  We were able to have significant input on the re-painting of all the courts, games, and activities and are very excited with the outcome.  With some slight adjustments we were able to add “Perry’s Path” (a .6 mile running loop around the area), create a designate area for 9-square, and will pilot the return of kickball to the blacktop in a safer format.  We think your children will love the changes and additions.

-The Dorothy Peterson Memorial garden was dedicated this last spring and I have seen garden volunteers around campus all summer adding some final additions, tending the vegetable garden, and planning for the next phase.  We are partnering with YoloArts again this year to bring enriching art instruction to each grade level and 6th graders will create the final piece of the legacy art project for the memorial garden.

- We look forward to seeing everyone at our Pioneer registration/class assignment pick-up day on August 21st from 4-6 PM in the Multi-Purpose Room.  If you missed or did not get the email with directions how to obtain your username and password, please call the DJUSD Technology department at 530-757-5300 x117 to get this information.  Our office is also available to answer any questions.  If you are unable to make it to Pioneer on August 21st, our office will be open on August 22nd.

Our partnership with families builds strong home to school connections.  As always, our PTA is planning many enriching events that add to our school.  A new slate of assemblies are being scheduled and traditional events such as the Dog Dash, Fall Festival, Book Fairs, and Pioneer Auction are being fine-tuned.  ADDITIONAL VOLUNTEERS ARE ALWAYS NEEDED so please check out the PTA letter included in this mailing.

Pioneer is fortunate to have tremendous stability and continuity in our teaching faculty and staff – with just a few changes to our roster.  A complete roster of our Pioneer team is below.  On behalf of this awesome team, we look forward to seeing your children back at school on August 23rd for another great school year!

Sincerely,

Matt Duffy
